Focus on Your Dream, Not Their Doubts

Updated: May 3, 2021

If I’m honest with myself, other people’s doubts in me are what fueled my desire to start a business of my own.

To prove to them, and then to myself, that not only was I an expert in my skills, but that I was worthy and valuable for my contributions. That the gifts God had given me were needed and meant to go further than their doubts believed I could go.

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever had other people’s doubts chanting a mantra in your head that drove you to make major changes? Where their words fueled your resolve to be more than they thought you could be?

I’m not saying this is a healthy way to live, I’m just saying this is an honest appraisal of where I started from.

One of the things I’ve learned in the nearly two years of building my business is that other people’s doubts have no place in my mind or heart.

I once worked for a company that had an entire team of writers. While I wrote for the business, my writing was always focused on various forms of marketing and promotion. I thought others couldn’t see that I was a writer because my writing fell in a different category than that of the “writer’s” team.

Over the past 6 months I’ve embraced the fact that I am a writer. I don’t need to be on a writing team in order to be a writer. I don’t need a title or a paycheck to prove I’m a writer (although now more than ever I do make a living from my writing).

The bottom line is, I’m a writer. And I’m a damn good one if I say so myself.

I absolutely love the written word. I love crafting sentences and pairing them with visuals to reach others and inspire change. Sometimes my writing inspires others to purchase a product, or equips them with tools they never knew they needed. Other times, my writing encourages people to have hope, to take one step forward and then another and another until they’ve realized the dreams they set in their heart to achieve.

And sometimes my writing is merely an avenue, bringing joy through the use of words, highlighting the beauty surrounding us in this world we call home. An opportunity to view the world through a new lense, and bring something worthwhile to fruition in the midst of life’s daily struggles.

Whatever your “I am” statement is, I hope you embrace it for all its worth, not because you’re battling other peoples' doubts and limitations for you, but because it’s part of your soul and brings you to life in ways that nothing else does.

That’s what words do for me. I pray your thing will do the same for you.
